If you're like me, you are about to pop from waiting for final election results and need a joyful distraction! How about turning to some candidates of a different nature — the 2020 Tony Award nominations! Even though they have yet to set a date for the award ceremony, it’s never too early to start planning your watch party snacks. Here are some theater-themed chocolate treats, perfect for getting in the spirit to cheer on your favorite productions (and of course you can go ahead and make these to help you get through the next couple of days also).
Moulin Rouge, nominated for 13 Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical
Traveling to Paris is a bit difficult right now, but enjoying a chocolate croissant (or pan au chocolat, if you want to get authentic about it) and rooting for Moulin Rouge this Tony’s season is one way to pretend you’re in the City of Love!
A Christmas Carol, nominated for five Tonys, including Best Original Score Written for the Theater
One of the most memorable scenes from this classic story is the big Christmas feast at the end. None of these dishes involve chocolate, so if you want to recreate part of this meal and still quench your chocolate craving, you’ll have to get creative. The Christmas pudding described in the book is not Jello brand pudding like we might be used to, but actually “a speckled cannon-ball, so hard and firm, blazing in half of half a quartern of ignited brandy, and bedight with Christmas holly stuck into the top.” To get a similar visual effect, you could make a chocolate bomb (very trendy these days). Or, to keep things simple, just get in the Christmas spirit by dipping some candy canes in melted chocolate for a refreshing and festive treat.
The Rose Tattoo, nominated for two Tonys, including Best Original Score Written for the Theater
Use chocolate plastic to fashion edible chocolate roses, perfect for putting on top of a cake or eating on their own. You can also make rose-infused chocolate truffles for a more involved chocolate project.
Tina––The Tina Turner Musical, nominated for 12 Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role
One of the best known Tina Turner impersonators goes by the stage name of––wait for it––Hot Chocolate. Need I say more?
Jagged Little Pill, nominated for 15 Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical
